Bongo Drums are a type of world percussion instrument traditionally made up of two different size drums attached to each other. The larger drum is called a hembra (Spanish for female) and the smaller drum is called the macho (Spanish for male). The history of bongo drumming can be traced to Cuban music styles known as Changi and Son. These styles first developed in eastern Cuba (Oriente province) in the late 1800's around the time that slavery was abolished. In the 1950's, the bongo became one of the more popular instruments used by the Beatniks, a 'beat' culture that remained popular through the 1960's. The bongo is more traditionally used with latin music.
